Hospital Services Sleep Solutions
Sleep Apnea refers to pauses in breathing that occur while you sleep. These pauses usually last anywhere from 10-30 seconds or longer, until the body reacts with a more powerful breathing effort to overcome the problem. This cycle repeats itself throughout the night interfering with the normal sleep pattern.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea Include:
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Snoring with pauses in breathing
- High blood Pressure
- Gasping or choking during sleep
- Lack of concentration
- Morning headaches
- Memory loss
Sleep apnea and other sleep problems are diagnosed by performing an overnight test in a sleep laboratory called a polysmnography (PSG).
The best treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Produced by a machine, CPAP delivers pressure through tubing and a mask to the airway, preventing collapse.
Wearing CPAP may be difficult but at Respiratory Home Services, we extend every effort to ensure every experience is a positive one. We have a large selection of current CPAP masks, machines and other supplies. We are also fortunate to have the ability to work closely with sleep specialists. We invite you to schedule an appointment and one of our therapists would be happy to assist you.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) provides some funding for most Ontarians with a valid Health Card. This funding is provided through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP), only after completing a sleep study and having CPAP prescribed by a Sleep Specialist. In addition to ADP coverage, if patients have a benefits plan through a current or previous employer, it is recommended patients consult with them to see if there is coverage for the portion of the CPAP unit purchase not covered by the ADP.
